The use of virtual reality in our project

We associate a virtual reality model to our digital simulator. We use this technology to recreate a connected house and interact with it.

The first virtual reality goggles have been commercialized in 2016. this commercialization led to a lowering of the price and an enhancement of the devices’ quality.


The use in our project 


This virtual reality popularisation has especially permitted to enjoy the benefits of this technology. For a medical purpose, it is used to cure several phobias such as agoraphobia or phobia of heights. For our project, we want to use the presence properties, defined as the sensation to be integrated in the virtual environment. We wish to use these properties to help the patient to project himself in his future home, and so facilitate the adaptation phase of the connected house.


Progress on portage


To achieve this, we are currently using last year work on the digital simulator, which allowed to quickly build the 3D environment of the connected house and associate a profile in order to imitate the interaction of the patient with his future house. A first person visit of the house was already included in the simulator. We will execute a portage of this first person visit unit to virtual reality goggles in order to improve the immersion.


The arrangement of the home

We also want to add the possibility for an operator to finalise the arrangement of the house with the patient.That’s why we are going to connect two instances of the application between themselves, one for the patient immersed in the goggles and the other one for the operator, behind his computer, helping the patient to organize the house. The operator will be able to know the position and the orientation of the patient but also add, move or delete objects and furniture during the visit.


The user's movement 

The use of the VR goggles allows us to make the patient physically move in his future house. A teleportation system will obviously exist to make the patient move on long distances, but it appears necessary that the person can move by himself on small distances in virtual habitation in order to reach a satisfying level of immersion and presence. For that purpose, we wish to also add some simple interactions like moving a few small objects or even interact with some connected devices.

This use of virtual reality should permit new researches whether this is for health or virtual reality domains.
